Excerpt from Sérusier's " course notes " (1910-1912) on a comparison between art and the alphabet (published in the annex p. 162 of the third édition of A B C of painting.  Paris: Floury librairie, 1950).

" To me, A B C D mean the geometric and simplifying primitive principles to be round in ancient art, even ageless ones.  X Y Z mean the minute intricacies brought by declines in art, i. e precarious equilibriums which are well to the fore during declining times and the basic roots without which there is no reliability.  "
