A small group of young
painters was formed in 1945, including Deyrolle, Dewasne, Hartung,
Marie Raymond and Schneider. From 26th February to 20th March
1946, the five of them showed their " abstract works " at the Denise
Rene Gallery, which opened fifteen months earlier, 124, rue La Boétie.
Soon Gilioli, Poliakoff and Vasarely (who had inaugurated it on 10th
November 1944 by an exhibition of figurative works), then Mortensen
and Robert Jacobsen just arrived from
Denmark, entered the group. In the days following the Second
World War, there were very few galleries supporting abstract art in
Paris (and elsewhere). Quite suprisingly, they were all directed
by women (René Drouin excepted), i. e: Colette Allendy, Florence
Brown (Galerie des Deux Iles), Jeanne Bucher, Lydia Conti, Suzanne
de Coninck (Galerie de Beaune), Eva Philippe (Galerie du Luxembourg),
Denise René...
J.D. had five personal exhibitions at the
Denise René Gallery. Until
the middle of the 50s, he participated in every big group exhibition
of the gallery. Again, in 1966, Denise René mounted his
first retrospective exhibition in Paris. J.D. had not
been shown rue La Boétie for about ten years.
