Magnelli, " Pittore
fiorentino ", was bom in 1888 in Florence (Piazza del Duomo) and died
in 1971 at Meudon-Bellevue.After many travels in France, Magnelli
settled for good in Paris in 193 1. After the Second World War, he
was one of the few living pioneers in abstract art and he continued
to work until the late 60s.
J. D. met him in February 1944 at Domela's.
He soon familiarized himself with the work gathered in the studio
of the Villa Seurat.Magnelli fascinated J.D. at once, by the
rigor of his ethic as well as by his acute perception of plastic arts.

The memorable Magnelli
exhibition mounted in 1947 by the Drouin Gallery confirmed him again
in his ideas. Several paintings by J. D. paid a tribute
to him implicitly.
Partly under Magnelli's influence; J.D. used
tempera. Although Magnelli worked
in oil, his paintings were mat, because he never varnished them.
J.D. was very fond of Susi and Alberto Magnelli. Four
weeks before his death, he spent a few days with them at " La Ferrage
", in their house near Grasse. |
