| " One may be tempted sometimes to finish
what is unfinished, to restore a precarious balance and add
the missing decimal to the unit. Deyrolle is not involved
in that when he allows a painting to be looked at, not only
every smallest part has found a right place and the right proportion
between form, surface and tone which makes it extremely dependent
from the others, but their harmony has found again the original
unity resulting from the conception to reach the compelling
and captivating perfection. Without doubt, this remark
only concerns an " elementary " state and it would be banal
if this state was not in fact so rare and if, in this particular
case, it did not confirm that Deyrolle has an infallible sense
of measure, the permanence of which in the most perilous reinventions
of painting, has ensured among the generations that follow the
great artists, the survival of the French tradition as well
as its supremacy. " |
