Odile Degand was J.D's schoolfellow at the "
Art et Publicité " School. She was also a thoughtful
friend, closely following his work since the 30's. In 1938,
she was a young teacher at Brest. She introduced J.D. to
Charles Estienne, whom she married
in September of the same year. In June 1942, she showed her
works together with J.D. at the Jacquet Gallery at Bourges.

Two years after her divorce (pronounced
in 1948) she married Léon Degand,
the critic and lived with him until he died in 1958. Afterwards, she
bought a house at Gordes, not far from
J.D's studio where she still lives today. Under the name
of Oile Degand, she wrote a few accounts on J.D. (see Biblio).
