The " Art et Publicité " School, 14 rue de Fleurus in Paris was
founded by Adrien Bruneau in order to apply a different artistic
education from the sclerosed and old-fashioned one prevailing at
the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Art Décoratifs, where
he had taught. J.D. was enroled at the School from
October 1928 to July 1932. He enjoyed great freedom since
creative imagination, emulation, desire were to compensate for the
lack of marking and reward... He attended the course of " sketching
movement after pictures " given by André Pec, but also grew
enthusiastic over Jacques Ruppert's course on costume which began
with sketches of the

garment after a living model, then was
followed by an historical comparison in the different civilizations
and finished by a research on colour, material, cutting out, drapery,
etc. J.D. would also go in for wood-engraving and lithography
in the studiorum by Jean Denonain. Among his fellow students,
let's quote Marcel Camus (the future film-producer), Françoise
Estachy, Marie Moulinier (who later, wove tapestries designed by J.D.),
Véra Pagava, Paul Rouiller and Odile Vacherot (see § Degand
Odile), a constant friend. |
